L'incoronazione di Poppea (in English: The Coronation of Poppea)
L'incoronazione di Poppea (in English: The Coronation of Poppea)
Following the success of New Opera Singapore's highly acclaimed production of “Orpheus in the Underworld” in 2016, reviewed by The Straits Times as, "a performance that reflects the increasing depth and ability in Singapore opera production and the blossoming of the country's operatic stars of the future," and upon the conclusion of our successful concerts “Cabared" and "Stabat Mater", New Opera Singapore would like to introduce you to our 2017 original production, a modern premiere of Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea, for the first time ever performed in Singapore.
A little insight into L'incoronazione di Poppea:
Composed in 1643, Monteverdi's opera is one of the first operas to derive its plot from real historical subjects, the Roman emperor Nero's love for his ambitious courtesan-mistress, Poppea. The story took us on Poppea's ruthless journey to become Empress of Rome, with elements of roman mythology involved as the goddesses Fortune, Virtue, and Amore, and other intriguing characters.
It will be a grand production involving 14 Principal Singers, and will be brought into life through the vision of our Founder and Artistic Director, soprano Jeong Ae Ree(Native Korean), accompanied by some of Singapore's best musicians performing in New Opera Singapore Orchestra, under the leadership of Mr Chan Wei Shing.
