- Anne Hathaway’s visit to Korea
- Anne Hathaway’s visit to Korea
Anne Hathaway the wacky Princess of the “Princess Diaries” series is back!! : starring in a monster movie which is again wacky, common sense defying, and sublimely funny. We are now getting another taste of Anne Hathaway’s comedy which has been sorely missed.
The Story
Anne Hathaway plays the persona of Gloria, who is initially portrayed as an unenthusiastic job seeker who prefers to live by sponging off her friends. The movie starts with Gloria’s boyfriend kicking her out of their apartment in New York. With no other place to go to, Gloria returns to her parents house at her hometown (unnamed, but reads as Mainhead from the school bus).
The beginning of the movie depicts Gloria as an out-of-luck and aimless soul making people wonder why they have paid good money to view a nonconsequential story. But, this is where the real story starts. Still experiencing alcohol-induced blackouts, Gloria starts to realize that her loss of memory incidents coincide with the appearance of a giant alien in Seoul, South Korea. Jason Sudeikis plays the persona of Oscar, an old hometown friend who is initially portrayed as a “good guy” who helps Gloria find her feet, but slowly morphs into a “bad guy” who is full of inner resentment of all the friends who left town for success in the big cities. Jason Sudeikis gives a solid performance as a cheery guy who maintains his cheeriness even when acting evil, which brings forth a lot of goosebumps and eeriness.
To bring forth the clash between good and evil, Oscar is also able to manifest a giant robot (also in Seoul, South Korea). The good intentions of Gloria’s monster is trodden over by Oscar’s monster, with Gloria unable to fight back due to physical disparity. Gloria has an eureka moment and travels to Korea, manifests the monster in her hometown, and is able to defeat Oscar.

Comments & Facts
Anne Hathaway has not lost her comedy style of being both wacky but lovable. Her down to earth, no frills style of comedy still has the power to keep the audience entranced and in their seats until the end of the movie.
On another note, the director Nacho Vigalando should be the new director to be looked out for as he somehow manages to make some very impossible things happen. First, the director is able to portray Gloria has having heavy drinking blackouts, but escapes any feelings that Gloria has alcohol problems. Second, the director uses monsters, but is able to make the movie a human story with monsters in it (not a monster story with humans in it).
The movie was sued by Toho for copyright infringement of the “monster stalking through an urban environment” setting made famous by Godzilla. However, in true Hollywood fashion, the case was withdrawn before it actually got to the judge. Personally, the movie seemed like a poke at Pandora, where the human-Navi biologicals are threatened by the human-robot mechanicals (with biologicals proving to be superior to mechanicals. Go figure).
Unfortunately, Anne Hathaway did not travel to Korea for any of the scenes. Also, only a few of the scenes of Korea are recognizable at first glance. This is because the street scenes were filmed at Bucheon, a smallish city to the west of Seoul (and recognizable only to fans who attend the Bucheon Comic Festival) ; and the river scenes were filmed at Yoeuido, not a hotspot for tourists. The reason for avoiding large cities such as Seoul or Busan could be due to authenticity. Seoul or Busan would have too many tourists!
Anne Hathaway was not able to travel to Korea due to this movie being a low budget film. However, she did manage to have the last word :
